Doris Payne is well known for her crimes.
A notorious worldwide jewel thief on house arrest was detained and charged with shoplifting at an Atlanta-area Walmart on Monday. A film starring Halle Berry as Payne has been in development since 2009, and the documentary "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne" was released on 2013.
A notorious 86-year-old jewel thief tied to a string of thefts since the 1950s has struck again, police say.
The heist didn't follow Payne's usual M.O. of pocketing pricey trinkets - a security guard caught the octogenarian bandit placing $86.22 worth of knickknacks from the store into her purse and then trying to walk out with the ill-gotten goods. "She was at Walmart", her attorney Drew Findling told NBC.
"This is a sharp contrast to all the cases in the past". "We're talking about what an 86-year-old woman needs to survive on a day-to-day basis, food supplies and medical supplies".
The police report doesn't list the items that Payne allegedly tried to steal.
Police said she paid for what was left in her cart, but failed to pay for the items she had already placed in her purse and shopping bag.
The jewel thief took items from the pharmacy, electronics section and grocery aisles. She also said that medicine she had taken "muddled" her mind prior to when she went to Walmart.
NBC reports Payne was arrested while wearing an ankle monitor that was placed there by her probation officer and that she was in court less than four months ago for shoplifting a necklace worth almost $2000 last December.
She was booked in the City of Chamblee Jail on multiple charges of theft by shoplifting.
Payne, who appeared effortlessly elegant and spoke with calm deliberation during the interview with the AP, nevertheless grew cagey when asked about her methods.
Officials claim that she has used at least 22 different aliases to help her steal during the course of her criminal career.
After confusing employees with the number of expensive jewelry items out of their cases, she casually slips one on her finger and leaves the store, the AP reported.
