"Just received verbal govt approval for The Boring Company to build an underground NY-Phil-Balt-DC Hyperloop". The Pittsburgh to Chicago trip would take about 45 minutes. He says there also would be stops in Philadelphia and Baltimore.
Musk said a lot of work needs to be done to get final approval, but he said he's "optimistic that will occur rapidly".
On 19 July, Elon Musk announced that his company would be redesigning its Mars landing plans and moving away from the previous Red Dragon lander. High-speed-rail linking the cities of the northeast has been talked about for decades, but Musk sounds like he wants to make it a reality.
An overview of the technology at Architectural Digest says Hyperloop pods will reach blazing speeds of up to 750 miles per hour, whisking passengers from city to city through near frictionless vacuum tubes. A number of start-ups have begun to develop the technology, despite concerns about the cost and practicality. He said he'll start the project "in parallel" with the LA tunnel network.
Hyperloop is a high-speed transit system concept created by Musk in 2013.
In similar fashion, the press secretary for New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio tweeted that this was the first he had heard of the project and that he had no clue what "verbal approval" meant.
Musk also said that he is hoping to discuss how his plans to reach Mars have changed since his presentation previous year at the upcoming International Astronautical Congress.
When asked about Musk's tweets, a White House spokesperson said: "We have had promising conversations to date, are committed to transformative infrastructure projects, and believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector".
Representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation were not immediately available to respond to Musk's assertion; the federal government would presumably have some say over such a venture.
