On Thursday Balwantsinh Rajput (who was also the chief whip), Tejashreeben Patel and Prahlad Patel had resigned. Shah was earlier a MLA and many thought he coveted the idea of running Gujarat one day.
The Gujarat Congress was alarmed by cross-voting in recently concluded presidential election where its 11 MLAs voted for NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind. "The party never took a clear position on the aspirations of the Patidars", she said.
Balwantsinh Rajput's daughter is married to Mahendrasinh, the son of rebel leader Shankersinh Vaghela.
Asked to react, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Nitin Patel dismissed the allegations.
The BJP's total MLA strength is 121, of which it needs 92 votes to get two of its candidates through.
The BJP is trying to neutralize Patel's chances of being re-nominated in the Rajya Sabha by defecting more than a dozen more MLAs, according to a senior BJP leader, who did not wish to be named.
The erosion from its legislature party has cast a shadow on the fate of Patel as his party has to zealously guard against further desertion of MLAs to ensure his victory in the election due to be held on August 8. Patel was expected to win the third seat comfortably, until Vaghela chose to raise the banner of revolt. Singhvi also accused the BJP of adopting unlawful measures with the use of money and power to force the Congress MLAs to switch sides and quit the assembly.
Besides the six legislators who already quit, two more MLAs have threatened to sever ties with the party.
The desertion of MLAs from the Congress Legislature Party is worrying for the party ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls on August 8, especially in view of leader Ahmed Patel's bid for the Upper House.
The three MLAs, known to be close to Vaghela, later joined the BJP in presence of the party's National President Amit Shah. "We also demand that Shri Amit Shah and Shri Vijay Rupani must come forward and answer to the people of Gujarat, as also to people of the country", he added.
