U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan defended White House chief of staff Reince Priebus on Thursday after President Donald Trump's new communications director appeared to link Priebus to media leaks in a tweet.
Scaramucci seemed to be accusing the White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, of being the source of the leak.
Then on Thursday, Scaramucci called into CNN's New Day to deliver a bonkers 30-minute interview in which he said his relationship with the chief of staff may not be repairable, comparing it to that between Cain and Abel (according to scripture, Cain ended up murdering Abel by impaling him in the head with a blunt object).
So far, no comment from the president.
Scaramucci tweeted that someone had illegally leaked financial information about him, conspicuously mentioning Priebus's Twitter handle. "When I said we were brothers from the podium, that's because we're rough on each other". And I believe he has the president's confidence.
"Wrong! Tweet was public notice to leakers that all Sr Adm officials are helping to end illegal leaks.@Reince45", he tweeted in response to an Axios article's headline that read, "Scaramucci appears to want Priebus investigated by FBI".
On Wednesday night, Scaramucci tweeted that the release of this document was a "felony" and that he would be contacting the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department.
Scaramucci briefly served at the Export-Import Bank earlier this year and was required to fill out a financial disclosure form. It was released after a public records request by a Politico reporter.
"It starts to potentially smell and approach an inappropriate line", Zaid said.
Later in the interview, Scaramucci addressed Priebus in even clearer terms.
Asked what he meant by including Priebus, Scaramucci says, "If Reince wants to explain he's not the leaker, he can do that".
Trump has praised Scaramucci's combativeness and naked loyalty, which the president has contrasted with Attorney General Jeff Sessions' perceived betrayal.
"They've got to get this sorted out between the two of them, and it would be nice if they didn't do it in public", he said. Gerstman has done projects for the Trump Organization and is a neighbor and longtime friend of Scaramucci's.
But another rule of thumb in Trump's inner circle is that it's never wise to outshine the president. "It reminds me of Icarus flying too close to the sun".
