Millar's creative vision jibes with Netflix, said Erik Davis, managing editor for Fandango.
The deal gives Netflix exclusive rights to Millar's portfolio of comics and graphic novels, several of which, including "Kingsman" and "Kick-Ass", were adapted into movies. Millarworld will continue to create new stories and franchises under Netflix.
Netflix has made its first ever acquisition by purchasing comic book publishing company Millarworld for an undisclosed amount. His 2002 comic book "The Ultimates" was named best comic book of the decade by Time's Techland.com and was described by "Avengers" screenwriter Zak Penn as the blueprint for the Marvel cinematic universe. Since Millarworld was started, the company and its co-creators have given birth to eighteen published character worlds, of which three, Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman, have yielded theatrical films that together have grossed almost $1 billion in global box office.
Millar said in the statement: "I'm so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans".
The streaming-video company on Monday didn't say how much it paid for Millarworld, which was created by Mark Millar.
Netflix's stock is mostly flat in early trading after the news was released. This marks the first acquisition of this kind by Netflix as the company seeks to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories. We'd all had success at DC and Marvel, but this was a chance to control the characters created and reap the rewards from any future movies, TV or merchandise that ever came from those characters and books.
"The moment [Millar's wife] Lucy and I walked into Netflix's headquarters in California last Christmas, we knew this was where we wanted to be", he wrote. Disney bought Marvel Studios in 2009 and has churned out blockbuster movies, TV series and toys based on its superheroes. "These guys are going to take Millarworld to the next level, and I feel like Richard Dreyfuss, wide-eyed and walking around the mothership at the end of Close Encounters when I see their global plans and it's crazy-exciting to be a part of it", Millar said in his unique way.
