Despite battling multiple sclerosis at the time, Cuthbert took centre stage at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney when she participated in the final stages of the torch relay in Homebush Bay.
Cuthbert instead punched her own ticket to fame, winning the 100m and 200m double and as a part of the victorious 4x100m relay team.
Respected world-wide, Cuthbert was an inaugural inductee to the IAAF Hall of Fame, which began in 2012, and is also a member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame.
Cuthbert added a fourth gold medal in the 400m at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
"Betty battled her illness for many years and showed tremendous courage, but more importantly she always managed to smile".
Later that year, she won Olympic gold medals in the 100, 200 and 4x100 on home soil in Melbourne, becoming the "Golden Girl" of the Games. "It was this faith that kept her going for so long and through the most hard times".
She was honoured with a statue cast in bronze outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the main 1956 Olympic stadium.
One of our finest athletes to ever grace the track, Cuthbert remains the only Olympian to have won a gold medal in all sprint events (100, 200, 400).
"I realised from a very early age that God gave me a gift, and that gift was to run, and I wanted to use it to the best of my ability", she said. She was the first Australian to win triple Olympic gold.
Athletics Australia on Monday confirmed that Cuthbert died overnight in Western Australia state.
"Her feats on the track brought together Australians as one", Bertrand said.
JANA PITTMAN, two-time 400m hurdles world champion (told Fox Sports): "She was an icon for our sport".
Having being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1969, the track star passed away in Perth aged 79.
"I'm so happy I got to meet such a tremendous and gracious role model, and Olympic Champion".
"Rest in Peace Betty Cuthbert - an inspiration and a champion on and off the track", Turnbull said. "I think there is a reason why I have MS and that is to inspire other people who are suffering from the disease", she said.
