The former league MVP had surgery in March to fix a partially torn rotator cuff in his right, throwing shoulder. He threw at least five interceptions in one practice this month.
It will be the team's third preseason affair of the year. However, it is important to note that traditionally, Week 3 of the preseason is considered the dress rehearsal for Week 1 of the regular season.
The Jaguars (1-2), meanwhile, will continue their quarterback competition into the preseason finale at Atlanta. I'm going to go back and look at things and see where we're at. Needless to say, he's going to have to fix these issues if he plans to be the team's long-term starter. You'd like to make the decision quickly, but you want to make sure you make the right decision.
Chad Henne got the start over Blake Bortles and had an up-and-down night that would have been much better if not for a drop. He went 12-of-16 for 125 yards, a touchdown and an interception while playing with the first-team offensive line and second-string skill position players against the Panthers on Thursday.
Henne was on target to both Keelan Cole and Robinson in the end zone, but neither receiver could hang onto the ball that was momentarily in his hands.
Henne was sacked three times in the first half against the Panthers. The situation they're in, sadly, is one in which they are the Jacksonville Jaguars. His second season represented a step forward, with his yards per attempt and touchdown rate rising and his interception rate taking a slight dip, but Year 3 exposed that much of his "progress" the year prior had been the result of dominating garbage time. The ill-advised pass was a little behind Allen Hurns and into double coverage.
Just a couple days after being benched for the team' third preseason game, Blake Bortles has his job back. Head coach Doug Marrone explained during his press conference that "I look at everything, not just the quarterback position" when discussing why he picked Bortles over Henne. You always want to see that.
