Other companies selected to construct concrete border wall prototypes are Caddell Construction Co. of Alabama, Texas Sterling Construction Co. and W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. of Mississippi.
Trump has said he thinks the 10-meter-tall wall should have windows, or even be fully transparent, so Border Patrol officers in the United States can observe suspicious activities on the other side of the barrier.
The Trump administration has taken another step toward building a wall on the USA border with Mexico, even as funding for the project remains in question.
Trump initially insisted that Mexico would pay for the wall, but its leaders have flatly rejected that idea.
On August 22, President Donald Trump threatened in a speech in Phoenix, Arizona to shut down the government by not signing a budget bill unless it includes funding for the borer wall. An MIT study puts the price tag at $38 billion.
Four companies were awarded contracts to build reinforced concrete models up to 9m high, Acting CBP Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello announced.
"We're going to use all the things that we think will work the best", Vitiello said. This stage of the border wall project will be paid for with funds already appropriated by Congress for the current fiscal year.
On March 17, CBP issued two Requests for Proposals to acquire conceptual wall designs with the intent to construct multiple prototypes. Homeland Security officials will then take 30 to 60 days to test the prototypes to see if they can be penetrated or otherwise compromised.
CBP has said it anticipates building four to eight prototypes and said Thursday it expects construction to begin this fall. That announcement is scheduled for next week.
