Leornado DiCaprio's foundation has donated $1 million (£775,000) as part of rescue funds for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. United Way Worldwide is the largest privately funded nonprofit that is working to support those affected by the strongest hurricane that has hit the U.S. mainland since 12 years.
Because of the tragic events now taking place in Texas, many celebrities are making donations in an effort to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The money will be used to help thousands of evacuees in Louisiana and Texas.
DiCaprio's contribution acts as "the inaugural donation to the newly established United Way Harvey Recovery Fund", according to Variety.
Houston is the hometown of global pop singer Beyonce. Just like him, actress Sandra Bullock has donated a total of $1 million to help the people affected by the massive flooding in Texas, CNN reported. "There are human beings in eight feet of water".
Actor and comedian Kevin Hart issued a challenge to some of his fellow celebrities to donate relief money, posting a video to hIs Instagram Sunday night.
The Kardashians also made donations giving $250,000 to the ARC and a matching sum to The Salvation Army.
"My heart goes out to my hometown, Houston, and I remain in constant prayer for those affected", she told The Houston Chronicle on Monday.
Additionally, pop star Miley Cyrus became tearful Wednesday on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" after the host announced Cyrus' $500,000 donation to relief efforts. "I'm going to lead the charge and step up in this way".
Hurricane Harvey struck Texas at peak intensity on August 25, and it has caused at least 31 deaths and huge economic losses which are estimated to range from $10 billion to $160 billion.
