Steve Stricker, who is a five-time Presidents Cup victor, has been named captain this year and he made the decision to pick Charley Hoffman, who only just missed out on an automatic position, and Mickelson as his two wildcards.
Now that the two teams for the Presidents Cup are finally set, we can focus on what's really important: Betting odds for the biennial event.
Mickelson is a controversial pick because he hasn't won on Tour since 2013 but he does bring experience having played in all Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups since 1993. His overall record is 23-16-12, and one more victory would allow Mickelson to tie Tiger Woods for most in the Presidents Cup. He struggled a bit toward the end of the year but finally showed his desre to get on the team. "I got reports from the other players that it was the Phil of old". 4 at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J.
"What means a lot this year is the players and captains wanted me on the team", Mickelson said.
Worldwide team captain Nick Price filled out his squad by naming Argentina's Emiliano Grillo and India's Anirban Lahiri to a team that has defeated the United States just once since the competition began in 1994.
Stricker said Charley Hoffman has'shown a lot of fight and will be a great addition to our team
Price, who was the losing worldwide captain in both 2013 and 2015, went with Grillo, who moved into the 11th position on Sunday, and Lahiri, who was 16th in the standings but got the spot because of his familiarity with the PGA Tour.
Hoffman, meanwhile, finished No.11 in the US Presidents Cup rankings and was an obvious choice for a captain's pick after finishing less than a point behind Kevin Chappell, who clinched his spot last week.
Plus, Mickelson's biggest support comes from the NY area, and he's a favorite in the team room.
This is the first time since 2007 that every player on the worldwide team has a full PGA Tour card.
"People will rally behind him no matter where he's at, " Stricker said. Grillo was the PGA Tour rookie of the year in 2016 and remains close to USA players from his age group, such as Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger.
