Lights are turning back on across the county four days after Tropical Storm Irma caused widespread power outages.
The total number of customers still out, representing about 9 million people in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, dipped from a peak of more than 7.8 million customers, or over 16 million people, on Monday.
You can see the latest data on Florida power outages here. More than 8,000 personnel are working around the clock as part of Georgia Power's statewide restoration effort to restore power for the approximately 75,000 customers who remain. Exceptions to these estimates could occur in areas impacted by tornadoes, severe flooding and other extreme conditions.
Georgia Power said nearly all of the power should be restored in Augusta by noon Saturday. We thank our customers for their patience and support. The hurricane, one of the strongest and largest storms to strike Georgia in decades, brought high winds, heavy rain and flooding to every county in the state and impacted service to almost 1 million Georgia Power customers.
"Georgia Power continues to work with customers who are behind on payments or need to make payment arrangements through its usual customer service process", the statement reads. The company can not, by law, connect power to a damaged meter box, or other non-Georgia Power components, and property owners should contact a qualified electrician to make repairs in order for the company to reconnect service.
Selected to be Georgia Power's area manager, Sawhill is not yet officially on the job, but traveled to Statesboro last week and took part in the storm preparations, meeting with local officials in Bulloch County's Emergency Operations Center.
