Powered by a new processor, the Hero 6 can record 4K footage at 60 frames per second. (Well, that and the ultra-slow-mo 1080p at 240 fps.) The stabilization won't replicate what you get from a bigger, more feature-rich video camera harnessed to an external gimbal, but it could make action cam footage much more pleasant to watch.
A year on from the disastrous launch of the GoPro Karma drone, which in some cases fell from the sky and was temporarily withdrawn from sale, the device has received an update.
As predicted, Go Pro has debuted the Hero6 Black, with 60fps 4K video recording and beefed-up image stabilisation thanks to a new, custom-designed processor.
The camera looks like an outsized version of the company's rectangular Hero cameras, making it compatible with numerous mounts that GoPro has made over the years.
GoPro announced the new products at a media event in San Francisco. It's also ruggedised and waterproof to 10 metres as you'd expect. It also has Wi-Fi, the standardised GoPro mounting system for attaching accessories, and works with the GoPro smartphone app.
We've been hearing a lot about GoPro's Fusion 360 VR camera. It also advances GoPro's computer vision and machine learning capabilities, allowing the Hero6 to analyze visual scenes and sensor data for better QuikStories. GoPro confirmed today that its Fusion 360 camera is going to be available for purchase this November. The 6, like the 5, is waterproof to 33 feet and has a touch screen and voice control, but its WiFi is three times faster than the 5's. A new feature is an Overcapture option that allows users to select a more limited viewing field for the 360 feed.
Lastly, GoPro announced it updated its Karma video drone with two auto-shot features called Follow and Watch. The "Watch" feature enables to the drone to hover in place and keep the controller in the frame, even if the person with the controller is moving. After dominating the high-definition camera market, GoPro's profit margins collapsed in 2016, losing $419 million after years making profit.
