Oklahoma State flirted with disaster all night.
The bout between Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will be a sellout, according to the official Texas Tech football Twitter account.
At the start of the second quarter, Shimonek threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Cantrell to put Tech up 14-7 with 14:14 left in the first half.
Libero Hali Hillegas also recorded 34 digs against the Red Raiders. If they can force some turnovers and get that juggernaut Oklahoma State offense off kilter, Texas Tech will have a fantastic chance at not only playing well, but actually winning. Combine those misses with a Rudolph interception that was returned 95 yards by Texas Tech defensive back Damarcus Fields for a touchdown, and the Cowboys came away empty-handed on three separate red zone trips, which almost cost them the game. Oklahoma State outgained Texas Tech 597-384, surpassing its average by 17 yards. "We played defense when we had to, but on the offensive, we just didn't finish the deal".
Texas Tech ended up tying the game at 7-7 halfway through the first quarter after a pick-six by DaMarcus Fields.
Rudolph completed his first five passes in the game before either overthrowing or having a communication issue with receiver Jalen McCleskey near the end zone. Then, junior punter Dominic Panazzolo's punt was blocked by Oklahoma State, putting the Cowboys on Tech's 9-yard line.
Texas Tech: The Red Raiders twice settled for field goals with first downs inside the Oklahoma State 5.
It set up a 22-yard field goal by Ammendola to make it 31-17 Cowboys with 9:40 to play in the third quarter. Shimonek was just 29 of 45 for 330 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
On the drive following the interception, Oklahoma State moved the ball well again, only to have Matt Ammendola wind up missing a 22-yard field goal that bounced off the upright.
But, seven plays in the first quarter Oklahoma State was able to make it in the end zone bringing the score to 7-0 with around 11 minutes left. In that drive, Shimonek threw an interception that was caught by redshirt junior Jordan Brailford. Two plays later, the Cowboys were inside the Texas Tech red zone after a facemask penalty moved the ball to the Texas Tech 18-yard line. The Red Raiders held off Arizona State at home and earned a surprising victory - spearheaded by their defense - at Houston, snapping the Cougars' 16-game home win streak. In fact, they reached the red zone on every possession in the first half but couldn't find much separation on the scoreboard.
"We lost. It doesn't feel good at all", Shimonek said.
