Apple's problems have just got worse, with retailers in Australia already reporting "extremly slow" demand for the new iPhone 8, it's been revealed that several more iPhone 8 models have split with observers blaming a battery problem.
Interestingly, even if demand for Apple's iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is well below customer interest in the iPhone X, the availability of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus at the end of the quarter still may provide a nice boost to iPhone sales. Apple offered a free battery replacement service for the defective phones. "We continue to believe Apple's stock will not only benefit from this iPhone cycle but also the company's capital distribution initiative, attractive valuation and potential new innovations". (NASDAQ:AAPL) has said it is looking into reports of iPhone 8 Plus handsets bursting open due to swollen batteries.
One key determinant of whether Apple might meet its guidance is if management factored a later-than-usual launch for its flagship iPhone X into its forecasts.
The first complaint on the iPhone 8 Plus came from Taiwan.
A new report by analytics firm IHS Markit has named the Apple iPhone 7 as the top-selling smartphone of 2017.
For now, the current number of reports regarding inflated iPhone 8 batteries is not enough to conclude that the problem exists in every model distributed worldwide, Tech Crunch reported.
Apple apparently sent orders to Samsung Display, the iPhone X's OLED display manufacturer, for 5.28-, 5.85-, and 6.46-inch OLED displays, but the one for the smallest display has been canceled, according to ET News.
That won't be happening soon, though, as it could take Android companies about two and a half years before they can roll out phones with depth-sensing cameras and facial recognition prowess comparable with Face ID.
IHS Markit has also stated that compared to 2016, the number of smartphones with shipments of more than 1 million units per month has increased 22 from 17 in this year.
Importantly, all of this demand is incremental upside that is coming from new use cases, which is why the VCSEL market is expected to skyrocket from approximately $950 million in 2015 to $3.1 billion by 2022, according to Markets and Markets.
