Texas authorities recovered the body of a small child while searching for Sherin Mathews, the three-year-old girl who went missing on October 7 when her parents said they had left her outside at 3 am for not drinking milk.
A Texas police spokesperson said that investigators do not have a reason yet to believe that the body belongs to any other missing child. The medical examiner was working to determine the cause of death, he said. CBS 11 reported that the missing child's father has ceased to cooperate with the detectives, although he has not been charged with any additional crime yet. He has since posted bond, according to Perlich.
There's no positive identification yet on the body found in a culvert Sunday morning.
Child protective services removed Wesley Matthew's 4-year-old biological daughter and placed her in state custody after Sherin disappeared and he was arrested. The CPS says it's a standard custodial hearing, as the parents ask a judge to let them bring their biological daughter home in Richardson city in the USA state of Texas. Mathews had called the police to report about his missing daughter five hours later.
The Indian-American parents of the missing 3-year-old adopted Indian girl are expected to appear in a court tomorrow to fight to try to get back their other child, U.S. media reported.
During the investigation police took a number of items, including a vacuum cleaner, trash bags, hair fibers, cell phones and laptops, from Mathews' home.
Sherin Mathews went missing about two weeks ago, after her adoptive father, Wesley Mathews, reportedly forced her to stand in a darkened alleyway near their house at 3 a.m.as punishment for not drinking her milk. The tree is across an alley from the home.
"We do have the names of some relatives who have expressed interest in taking care of her", Gonzales said. Both of Mathews' parents were seen in public for the first time since Wesley's arrest.
Mathews told police he checked on Sherin 15 minutes after he sent her outside and saw that she was missing.
It isn't clear yet whether Sherin's foster parents had a hand in her disappearance.
Local media reports said that Mathews has stopped cooperating with the police.
