Next step: Leak to the media what Goodell is looking for.
In his most recent counterproposal to the Compensation Committee regarding his next contract as commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell in August sought almost a $50 million salary and lifetime private jet usage and healthcare for his family, according to ESPN.
ESPN also pointed out that there are several owners that don't clear $50 million a year in earnings. "It's offensive. It's unseemly".
The NFL has been in trouble ever since hundreds of players protested during the national anthem and its brand become one of the most divisive in the entire country.
Regardless of the maneuverings and machinations that brought the information to light, the end result will be to indeed make Goodell even less popular among the public.
Goodell's current contract runs out in March of 2019 and the commish and owners are now working on a five-year contract extension.
The contract extension negotiations for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell might have hit a snag recently with push back from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. However, NFL spokesperson Joe Lockhart denies that that is all Goodell asked for. As his 28-year ownership history shows, he is not afraid of taking an unpopular stand-and of angering his peers-when he feels he is right.
"I'm willing to bet on myself", Goodell said in a months-ago meeting with the committee, willing to forfeit much of the money that his current deal now guarantees in lieu of earning the bonuses.
Blank removed Jones as an "ad hoc" member of the compensation committee after Jones threatened to sue the league over a possible extension for Goodell.
Goodell is dealing with a league in turmoil in 2017.
As for what is best for the the game of professional football, one could argue that Goodell should be focused on resurrecting the NFL's ratings this year instead of his salary.
"The problem is, no one is talking about games anymore", said one owner. "It's about concussions, Jones vs. Goodell, Zeke, the anthem".
