The employee claimed that she was sacked because she would not "succumb to [Conyers] sexual advances", but instead of the allegations coming to light, Conyers settled with her for $27,000. The documents say the lawmaker repeatedly engaged in unwanted sexual behavior with his female staff, including rubbing their legs and backs and requesting sexual favors.
Other staffers also accused Conyers of using congressional resources to transport women with whom he was having affairs.
"Rep. Conyers strongly postulated that the performing of personal service or favors would be looked upon favorably and lead to salary increases or promotions", the woman claimed in documents, according to Buzzfeed.
BuzzFeed obtained affidavits related to the complaint.
House Speaker Paul Ryan issued a statement Tuesday morning saying he read a report of a sexual harassment claim against a member of the House of Representatives, but didn't specifically cite the BuzzFeed report.
Conyers told the Associated Press that he knows nothing about any harassment claims and learned of the story from watching TV. Her settlement came from Conyers' office budget and not the designated fund for settlements.
"My office resolved the allegations - with an express denial of liability - to save all involved from the rigors of protracted litigation".
A statement from Conyers' office said he was under the impression the AP reporter was speaking Tuesday of "recent allegations of which he was unaware of and denied".
CNN reported last week that just two members of Congress are typically responsible for signing off on such settlement payouts - the chairman and ranking member of the House Administration Committee. Ryan, R-Wis., said the House is updating its policies for handling complaints of workplace harassment and discrimination, which have been criticized as too weak and cumbersome. "People who work in the House deserve and are entitled to a workplace without harassment or discrimination", he said.
BuzzFeed said it received the documents from right-wing activist Mike Cernovich, but had independently confirmed their authenticity. Cernovich is the propagandist who published and distributed a number of false conspiracy theories during the 2016 election including the widely circulated "Pizzagate".
Conyers is among the most senior public officials to be implicated in the wave of sex scandals that have continued to break since actor Rose McGowan said she was raped by Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.
