The two presidents emphasized the need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian access as part of efforts to end the conflict, and UN-led peace talks in Geneva, the White House said in a statement. Putin also called for co-ordination of anti-terror efforts with the US, the Kremlin said, adding that Afghanistan was also discussed.
The phone conversation comes after Syrian President Bashar Assad was asked to visit Russia to get him to agree to potential peace initiatives drafted by Russia, Iran and Turkey as Russia prepares to scale down its military presence in the country's civil war, the Kremlin said Tuesday.
Putin and Trump most recently met informally on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Vietnam, where the two leaders had a few encounters and handshakes during "family photos". Gen. Mohammad Bagheri came ahead of Wednesday's trilateral summit on Syria with the participation of Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russia's Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
When Assad last visited Russian Federation in October 2015, some observers remarked that Putin appeared cold to the Syrian leader.
Mr Putin hosted Mr Assad in the Black Sea resort of Sochi yesterday.
Turkey and Russian Federation, together with Iran, are the guarantor countries that brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016, leading to the Astana talks, which ran parallel to the United Nations -backed discussions in Geneva to find a political solution to the six-year war. Special Counsel Robert Mueller and congressional committees are investigating both the campaign and possible collusion with Trump associates.
"I believe that (Putin) feels that he and Russian Federation did not meddle in the election", Trump said at a news conference in Hanoi, Vietnam.
