One of the women, Maddie Corman, was a 16-year old actor performing in one of Horovitz's plays Off-Broadway at the time of the alleged assault (1986).
The younger Horovitz's response is also detailed in the report, and it may surprise some who believe that the entertainment industry remains a "boys' club" that sticks together in the face of sex abuse accusations. The women, he said, were "tightly wound, if you know what I mean", adding that such accusations were tossed around "like manhole covers".
For his part, Horovitz, who is 78, told The Times that while he has "a different memory of some of these events, I apologize with all my heart to any woman who has ever felt compromised by my actions, and to my family and friends who have put their trust in me".
The tsunami of sexual misconduct allegations that has washed over the nation in recent weeks, from Hollywood to Congress and elite corporate board rooms, has found its way to Gloucester.
Meinhardt claimed she once dated his son, Beastie Boys member Adam Horovitz, and had known the playwright on a personal level when she began a summer fellowship at the Gloucester Stage Company, where he served as artistic director, in 1989.
Frédérique Giffard, a 16 year-old au pair for Horovitz in 1991, said he groped her breasts and placed her hand on his erect penis. Nine women have come forward to allege unwanted advances from the writer ranging from groping and kissing to rape, and one of the alleged incidents is said to have occurred as recently as past year. He also was the founding artistic director of Gloucester Stage, which many considered to be a "safe haven" for playwrights.
This is not the first time Horovitz has been accused of sexual misconduct.
In light of the new allegations, Gloucester Stage has cut ties with Horovitz.
Zinn said the board called an emergency meeting and asked for Horovitz's resignation.
After arriving, Meinhardt, who was 19 at the time, said Horovitz locked the door and proceeded to grope and kiss her, leading her to cry.
"I would say we're certainly not planning any Israel Horovitz productions for the next year, and for the foreseeable future", Zinn said.
