The government agencies at the centre and the affected States are regularly monitoring the cyclonic storm and are conducting necessary relief and rescue operations. About 120 fishermen are still reported missing from the Kerala shores amid weathermen's predictions for heavy rain in Lakshadweep and Kerala till Wednesday. India's defence forces are continuing efforts to airlift fishermen in the area who have been caught in the cyclone.
The Committee also took stock of the preparedness activities in Maharashtra and Gujarat which are likely to be impacted by the cyclone.
Many rescued fishermen have been admitted to the medical college here and general hospitals since they were weak after being in the sea for the last 48 hours, the official said.
He wrote: "Precautionary holiday declared on 5/12/17 for schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Sindhudurga, Thane, Raigad and Palghar Districts for the safety of the students due to the serious weather predictions on #CycloneOckhi #MumbaiRains".
Cyclone Ockhi has lashed the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Saturday with torrential rainfall and gusty winds. Vijayan announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of victims who died in rainrelated incidents in the state.
The "very severe" cyclonic storm Ockhi - which in Bengali means "eye" - over Lakshadweep is likely to intensify further in the next 24 hours.
The Ministers said they had sought help from the Union Home Minister after explaining the situation to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Mangaluru: Two cargo vessels from Mangaluru bound for Lakshadweep capsized due to cyclone Ockhi near Lakshadweep while another vessel has gone missing. All fishermen have been warned to not venture out and those already out have been asked to return immediately.
"The Indian Navy, India Coast Guard, Indian Air Force, have rescued fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Kerala too".
