In September, the USOC's head of security, Nicole Deal, sent a letter to members of the US delegation saying, "Despite current political tensions with North Korea, there is no specific information to suggest there are imminent threats to USA citizens or facilities in South Korea".

The 2018 Winter Olympics begin on February 9 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which is located roughly 50 miles from the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. Previously, Haley said that it was "an open question" whether the USA would send its athletes to South Korea in view of a security threat in the wake of Pyongyang's missile launches. The IOC accused Russian Federation of systematic abuse of anti-doping rules at various sporting events, including the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
