Police arrested an elderly woman in central Florida after she refused to be evicted from her senior home.
A representative for the company that owns the facility said Fitzgerald told staffers she made a decision to not pay her rent because she thought she was going to die soon, WKMG reports.
Fitzgerald had apparently told police that she would not be going anywhere unless they physically carried her out - and so they did.
Karen Twinem who is with the church service said Fitzgerald told the staff she was holding back rent because she was going to die soon and that there was mold in her apartment.
Body cam video of the arrest, as seen in the video above, shows Juanita Fitzgerald resisting police attempts to forcibly remove her from her home on Tuesday.
Fitzgerald was released from jail Thursday and is staying with a friend until her December 27 court appearance. Fitzgerald was released Thursday on her own recognizance, a Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
She said that she even tried to pay in October but Franklin House wouldn't take it. Eventually, they manage to get her in the back of the police vehicle.
Fitzgerald was charged with trespassing.
Police said they offered Fitzgerald assistance from almost a dozen agencies to avoid arresting her, but she refused, so they had no choice but to place her under arrest for trespassing. Fitzgerald said she had bruises on her arms and legs after the arrest. She was not handcuffed because of her age and the possibility of injury, WFTV reported. She also noted that National Church Residences owns 340 properties.
They tell the 5-foot-tall, 100 pound woman to relax and insist they're not putting any pressure on her.
She said she couldn't understand why she was being evicted, but court records show she owed rent and would not pay. I don't need no help.
Terri Goldberg, a Franklin House resident, told WKMG: "I feel like everything was done that could possibly be done to help her I feel a lot of this was brought on herself". "We try to find places for people".
"Ow, God, you're hurting me", Fitzgerald said. She also allegedly turned down the offer to stay with a nurse who worked there.
