Google says that it is just like a fiber optic cable, only without the cable.
FSOC implementation in Andhra Pradesh will address the challenges of river crossings, railway crossings connecting those areas where fiber can not reach.
X's Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) technology is capable of transferring data at speeds of up to 20 gigabits per second between the rooftop boxes.
Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh's Information and Technology Minister confirmed that the state government will collaborate with Alphabet Inc's moonshot factory X to introduce high-speed internet for millions of people by March 2019.
Reports quoting sources in the Andhra government said the MoU was signed in San Francisco in the presence of Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh minister of IT, and X CEO Astro Teller.
Now, rather than having to worry about digging trenches and laying cables, the government has procured two thousand FSOC boxes from Alphabet's X arm, and will position them in high, line-of-sight locations such as roofs and towers miles apart.
For Indians to use Google's services, however, they need access to the internet. X engineers and experts on site will work together with APFSL personnel identifying and selecting suitable sites for deployment of the FSOC links. Lokesh, son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, tweeted that X will be the state's innovation partner, deploy its resources and team to help achieve the goal of Digital Andhra. FSOC will also help in providing high bandwidth to telecom towers (presently on low data rate microwave links) enabling to upgrade from 2G to 3G/4G services. If the implementation of this project in the state of Andhra Pradesh is successful, FSOC can be taken forward to provide network connection to the remotest reaches of the world. Google X is known for creating Waymo (driverless auto), Google glass, Project Loon (web through inflatables) and other most recent advances.
