The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey says global arrivals to Terminal 4 have been suspended, with passengers who have already arrived being taken to other terminals for processing.
Abrams video showed water on the ground in the arrivals area of the terminal and the chaos as travelers attempted a mass exodus from the airport.
Around 3:30 p.m., the airport announced via Twitter that global flights into Terminal 4 had been shut down.
"These included frozen equipment breakdowns, difficulties in baggage handling, staff shortages, and heavier than typical passenger loads", the statement said.
By about 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday, 50 flights out of JFK had been canceled and about 200 delayed, according to Flight Aware, a flight tracking website.
A China Southern plane clipped the right tail end of a Kuwait Airways plane before the latter was due to takeoff for an overnight flight around 12am Saturday morning, the Port Authority said on Twitter.
Customers complained both Friday and Saturday that they waited as many as six hours on the tarmac before their planes docked at a gate and as many as eight hours to collect their baggage from carousels. "We're frustrated. We didn't get any sleep and we still don't know where our bags are". People are getting angry. Nobody knows anything and they all give you a circular answer: "'it's coming soon'".
The Port Authority said the water pipe break appears to be weather related.
The Federal Aviation Administration added that the planes touched while the China Southern plane was being towed to a taxiway and the Kuwait Airways plane was at the gate awaiting departure.
The New York Port Authority said the problems are due to a surge in flights produced by the rescheduling of flights, WABC reported. "Customers may experience residual delays, particularly for worldwide flights".
