During Monday night's championship showdown between Alabama's Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs, President Trump took to the field during the playing of the national anthem. Trump stood on the field during the pre-game festivities, and during the Anthem, he placed his hand over his heart and sang along to some - but not all - of the song.
"It's not that hard".
"We want our flag respected, and we want our National Anthem respected also", Trump said during a speech to a farmers' convention in Nashville, Tennessee. According to a report in TIME, Trump's attendance was seen as an opportunity to protest as groups like the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP (The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and Refuse Fascism had planned demonstrations and protests in and outside of the venue.
He added, "We are fighting for that flag".
The president has attacked players who kneel for the anthem a movement started by Colin Kaepernick Mike
Television cameras caught the president appearing to sing parts of the anthem incorrectly before stopping altogether throughout segments of the song. President Trump's mental state has already been called into question, and the bad lip sync has been identified by some as proof that the president's mental health is deteriorating.
The Trump administration has made national anthem protests in the NFL an intense focus point in the first year in office, with Vice President Mike Pence attending a Colts game in October only to leave as players protested during the national anthem.
"It looked like Donald Trump just kept repeating "applesauce" during the National Anthem", commented a social media user. He renewed the attack earlier Monday on Twitter.
Trump stayed for half of the game, which he watched from a private box at Alabama's end of the stadium.
He did not stray away from his lyrics to say something about Trump, who reportedly left before K. Dot's performance.
