The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said, on Monday, that its mandate comes only from the United Nations General Assembly, which created it in 1950 following the Palestinians' dispersion from their homeland, with Israel's creation by a UN resolution in 1947.
The US is now UNRWA's primary source of funding, giving the agency over $300 million per year. "Behind the scenes, the prime minister is now in contact with the Americans in order to prevent the massive cut [in U.S. funding for UNRWA] - to prevent it, you heard it right", the Times of Israel quoted an Israeli TV broadcaster saying.
Now, 70-years-later, there are an estimated 5 million refugees and their descendants, many scattered across the region in countries like Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Israel has often criticized UNRWA of sheltering terrorists and perpetuating the plight of Palestinians throughout the Middle East by allowing them to maintain their status as refugees. But Trump sticking his nose into it by cutting off United Nations aid (even Israel is against it), moving the capital to Jerusalem, and giving about $3 billion per year to Israel is counterproductive, as is allowing Israel to take over Palestinian land and perpetuate the status of millions of Palestinian refugees.
A convoy of humanitarian aid waits in front of the UNRWA offices before making their way into the rebel-held towns of Madaya, Zabadani and al-Moadhamiya in the Damascus countryside, as part of a UN-sponsored aid operation, in Damascus, Syria, February 17, 2016.
The protestors condemned the United States policy which biased to the Israeli occupation and they expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people and the Palestinian detainees' families.
In a Twitter tirade last week, Trump conditioned the continuation of U.S. aid to UNRWA, one of the primary sources of humanitarian aid for Palestinian refugees, on the Palestinians' "coming to the negotiation table" with Israel.
According to UNRWA website, the U.S.is the largest donor to the agency as it annually provides about $370 million out of a total of around $874 million of funds the agency receives.
"They don't even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel", the U.S. leader added.
The Israeli Prime Minister said that practical steps must be taken to change the situation in which "UNRWA perpetuates the Palestinian refugee problem instead of resolving it". The bitter pill for the Palestinians is that Israel's military prowess brings more to the table than does absolute support for the entire Palestinian narrative.
"We (the Arab League) will confront the decision by seeking a resolution, an global one, to recognize a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital", Safadi said. Putting teeth to the rhetoric, a resolution of condemnation was voted on in the Security Council only to be vetoed by the United States; and Egypt canceled a meeting with Vice President Mike Pence before the Veep cancelled the trip altogether.
The U.S., by far the biggest contributor to the UN Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, had been expected to deliver the payment on January 2. "There are still deliberations taking place, and we have missed no deadline".
