The big news from GM is that the new Silverado will offer a diesel engine in a full-size Chevy pickup for the first time in 20 years. There won't be any bargains on the new Silverado.
The Chevrolet Silverado is one of the most important vehicles that General Motors makes so it comes as little surprise the company made a decision to unveil the truck at the North American International Auto Show.
The new Silverado will serve as the automaker's flagship.
The Silverado is the second-best selling vehicle in the US and is outsold only by Ford's F-Series pickups. Only the Ford F-Series outsells the Silverado. In other words, the beds are bigger, tougher and more useful. Instead, the automaker focused on a strategic use of metals to shave weight. "As such, we set out to create the best tool for the job at hand, one that makes work more productive and more enjoyable, no matter what they call 'work"'.
The doors, hood and tailgate are lightweight aluminum. There are now 21 tie-down points, twelve of which are fixed in the corners - each capable of handling 500 pounds, twice what the current model can deal with - and nine of which are movable.
The Silverado is critical to Chevrolet's business. It can be raised or lowered by pushing a button on the key fob or inside the cabin.
There are six engine/transmission combinations for the 2019 Silverado, including new 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 units with Dynamic Fuel Management cylinder shut-off technology, and an all-new Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel. It will accompany the 6.2L V-8 and utilize GM's 10-speed automatic transmission first seen in the Camaro ZL1.
GM has not said which transmission will be paired with the 5.3-liter V8.
While I may have argued years ago that pick-up truck interiors didn't particularly matter, these days they do. The vehicle maintains its familiar boxy cab and wide front fascia. Chevy is very proud of its new full-size truck, and it has plenty of reasons. An integrated spoiler at the rear edge of the cab moves air onto the tailgate lip, reducing wind drag from the bed. All of this results in a seven-percent improvement in aerodynamics, according to Chevrolet.
The 2019 Silverado's suspension is also lighter tanks to new forged-aluminum upper control arms that are lighter. The underlying safety cage uses seven different grades of steel.
"Chrome has become more polarizing, and more personal, than any other aspect of truck design", said Rich Scheer, director, Exterior Design, Chevrolet Trucks.

Chevrolet's "High Volume" truck buyer benefits from two new trims in addition to the Silverado 1500 LT: RST and LT Trailboss.
Ford's new Ranger is an interesting vehicle. The LTZ and High Country, like today's Silverado, represent the more luxurious end of the spectrum.
"These are vehicles that people really buy", Brinley said. Analysts expect sales to be just under 17 million in 2018. All these engine upgrades will ensure that the Chevrolet Silverado will be more fuel efficient than the previous models. While most of the interior looked the same, fans will be happy to know that will be getting the latest infotainment system from GM.
The 2019 Silverado may not be a huge leap forward technologically, but it checks all the boxes its customers want, Kim said. And to keep those heavy loads in place, there are now 12 tie downs.
Having said that, we brought you some incredibly detailed photos right away. Exact pricing information and fuel economy figures will be revealed closer to the pickup's official on-sale date.
