Norton was introduced last week as the San Francisco 49ers linebackers coach and assistant head coach. According to the National Football League network, Norton's contract contains an out clause allowing him to return to Seattle.
"Last week, Ken was presented with an opportunity to once again coordinate a defense". "Because of how we feel about Ken as a coach, we understand and respect his desire to pursue the position". Norton had been a linebackers coach there before becoming the Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator.
The 38-year-old Richard played cornerback for Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at USC for one season and played in the National Football League for four seasons, including his first three with Seattle.
Saturday the Seahawks hired Brian Schottenheimer from the Indianapolis Colts, where he was quarterbacks coach, to replace the fired Darrell Bevell.
Norton's apparent hiring means the Seahawks appear to have made their choices at both coordinator spots.
His final three seasons in NY were the most optimistic sign that Schottenheimer can help the Seahawks return to the run-first style that head coach Pete Carroll desires. Richard has not been officially relieved of his duties but the reports surfaced that Seattle was seeking a change at defensive coordinator after the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
Schottenheimer takes over for Darrell Bevell, who was sacked last week after seven seasons in charge of Seattle's offense. Most recently, Solari spent the past two seasons as the offensive line coach for the New York Giants.
This will be the second go-around for Solari with the Seahawks, having served as their offensive line coach from 2008-2009 under Mike Holmgren and Jim Mora Jr. During his earlier tenure in Seattle, Norton played a big role in developing two players who remain key pieces of Seattle's defense, middle linebacker Bobby Wagner and weakside linebacker K.J.
