Louise Turpin was seen smirking in court, which heard how only their two-year-old child was spared from cruel torture.
"What started out as neglect became severe, pervasive, prolonged child abuse", Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said at a Thursday news conference, noting that the abuse lasted at least seven years.
Cops searched the Turpin home after their 17-year-old daughter escaped the property and alerted them to the horrific treatment they were being subjected to, it is alleged. Each are being held on $9 million bonds, and both pleaded not guilty Thursday at their first court appearance.
Hestrin explained that the children, ranging in ages from 2 to 29, were starved so much their growth was stunted.
Uffer described the victims' conditions as "not so different than a prisoner of war".
Parks also told ABC News that the CPS office in Riverside is an advocate of sibling adoption, so there would be an effort to keep the siblings together.
"They're relieved, I'll say that", Hestrin said. "So we are providing that environment ... in terms of the teaching, training, educating, nourishing emotionally and physically".
The Andersons thought the wear-and-tear inside the home came from animals, but suspect that after hearing about the allegations against the Turpins that the former homeowners allegedly abused their kids for years before their move to California.
"Anne Frank lived in an insane world, but her family life was remarkably normal", Pennebaker said. How can you not?
She doesn't explain exactly why she lost her kids but adds: "Even despite losing my husband and children, I was able to worship and have peace and joy that only God can give".
'I hope they torture my sister for the rest of her life.
"So it's affected the staff".
After being beaten and choked in chains for months at a time, the children began planning their escape two years ago and on Sunday, their moment of deliverance came. So it does stay with you. They would also only return late at night.
In the meantime, the children are being treated at two separate medical facilities: The adults (aged 18-29) are being treated at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona, and the six children are under care at Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley.
"The response was immediate and it has been tremendous", Orr said.
They were, according to our source, astounded that people wanted to help them.
- Authorities say 13-siblings found shackled and tortured in Perris are relieved to be free, but experts say the children of David and Louise Turpin face years of therapy and they'll need to learn to live in a world that they never really knew.
David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, have been booked on charges of torture and child endangerment.
Although relatives of the Turpins have expressed their surprise, neighbors who only saw glimpses of the family have detailed several odd encounters.
