After filing a complaint previous year alleging sexual harassment, the woman reached a confidential agreement with Meehan's office. The money came from Meehan's congressional office fund.
"Congressman Meehan denies the allegations", his spokesman John Elizandro said in an email.
Meehan, 62, is a married father of three.
Meehan is a former federal prosecutor serving his fourth term in Congress.
However, one of the leading Democrats in that district, State Sen. The senior employee left the job; not long after, Meehan signaled to the woman that he was attracted to her as well.
But after the woman became involved in a serious relationship with someone outside the office previous year, Meehan professed his romantic desires for her - first in person, and then in a handwritten letter - and he grew hostile when she did not reciprocate, the people familiar with her time in the office said.
The aide then filed a formal complaint with the congressional Office of Compliance after her time in the office grew increasingly aggressive and toxic.
She said that Meehan knows her client is a private person who does not wish to reveal her identity.
The exact amount of the settlement could not be determined because it was paid from the congressional office fund, the Times said. Meehan has been asked to return the taxpayers' money.
The accuser's lawyer, Alexis Ronickher, rejected the call for her to waive the confidentiality requirement.
This account is based on interviews with 10 people, including friends and former colleagues of the former aide and others who worked around the office.
A spokesperson for Ryan confirmed that Meehan would step down.
Ryan spoke with Meehan Saturday and the Pennsylvania Republican agreed to submit himself to the Ethics Committee for review.
Ryan has removed Rep.
Ryan apparently is not calling for Meehan's resignation at this time.
Meehan's former aide declined multiple requests for comment.
"Today I joined with countless women across the country to demand equal treatment and speak out against sexual harassment", Moro said in a statement. Several of the Democrats, including Dan Muroff, Drew McGinty and Molly Sheehan, Saturday called on him to get out of the race and resign office after the report first broke Saturday. Pat Meehan felt that taxpayer dollars weren't needed to provide essential healthcare to women, including young girls who rely on CHIP, but they were needed to try and silence a victim of his sexual misconduct. "Meehan was voted in to advocate for the best interests of the 7th district, but instead used his power to personally and financially attack a staffer". If he refuses to resign, House leadership must strip him of his committee assignments. It's just outrageous. It is horrific.
"I think this mortally wounds his candidacy for re-election", Delaware County Democratic Chairman David Landau said.
