The organization has been attempting to salvage the pay-per-view ever since Max Holloway announced his injury and withdrew from the main event clash with Edgar just days ago.
Helwani also notes that even if the fight was booked, UFC officials aren't planning on making it to the main event for the card, as they would prefer to lead with a title fight instead.
Edgar presents one of the most hard match-ups for Holloway inside the Octagon, which is why so many fight fans were looking forward to this fight. The pair was initially supposed to headline UFC 218 last December, but the bout was cancelled due to injury of the latter. The champion rides a 12-fight winning streak, including two wins over Aldo, as well as victories over Cub Swanson, Anthony Pettis, Ricardo Lamas and Jeremy Stephens.
"Them belts are in me gaff", McGregor told Adam Glyn was asked if he was still the lightweight champion.
"Had dozens of family from Hawaii coming up for this one".
UFC 222 takes place at T-Mobile Arena. "And I think the UFC knows that, I think the fans know that, and I think that's what makes the most sense", says Lee. So, if we're going from a sporting perspective, I gotta throw my hat in the ring versus Diaz.
Edgar took to social media to voice his disappointment at the cancellation, wish Holloway a speedy recovery, and state his intentions to fight in Las Vegas.
