Sam Saunders was one of the players yet to complete his second round and he was on seven under with McDowell and fellow American Cantlay after 15 holes of his second round.
Cantlay, who shared the overnight lead with Tony Finau, had five birdies in his two-under par 69. He got to 1 under after 36 holes and is certainly still in the conversation as a victor.
Two more birdies and a bogey saw him make the turn at one-over, and he was even for the day after a birdie at the first. Johnson chopped up the fifth hole, going over the green from deep grass for his third shot, and then taking two to get on the putting surface on his way to a triple bogey. After being around 16-18 feet for birdies on sixth and seventh, he managed pars.
Woods made five birdies, and were it not for that pesky tree on No. 11, he likely would've broken par.
Ko Jin-young, 22, carded a three-under par 69 in morning conditions to go with her first-round 65 to be at 10-under 134 as the afternoon players battled in the sea breeze.
"I knew that if I could get back to 100 percent healthy then I would figure out the golf part". Woods, who had never missed the cut at Riviera in eight previous trips as a pro, was at 6-over 148.
Racking up five birdies after hitting only seven greens in regulation is remarkable, and it is in fact a career-first combination for Woods.
An optimist can point to Woods' impressive scrambling ability on a day when he needed only 25 putts. "I think it would be a smart sign if I didn't play".
After going out in 2-over 37, Woods birdied the 10th hole to put himself right around the projected cut.
McIlroy overcame three bogeys with a birdie and an eagle at the par-five first - where he rolled in a 30-footer - for an even par 71. The idea that Woods has never won a professional tournament at Riviera Country Club is baffling to me. "The greens were fast and bumpy, and I knew that," Woods said.
"I need to string some numbers together, get in the mix a little bit on the weekend, start believing in myself a little bit", McDowell said. "I kept missing it above the hole and that's what was ticking me off.".
This result follows a T-23 finish at Torrey Pines three weeks ago. "I've just got to play more tournaments", he said.
The leaderboard might not seem great at first glance, but I'm certainly excited about it through 36 holes.
"I didn't play very well on that back nine, and the feeling of not feeling very good over my putts finally caught up with me", Woods said.
"(But) just the inconsistency of it.
