The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), which is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has gained a seat in Nagaland after the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday reversed the result of the Tenning Assembly constituency.
Chuba Ozukum, president of the Naga Hoho, the apex tribal body, said a strong opposition could mean a stable government, which, he added, was necessary for the peace process. BJP has already formed a pre-poll alliance with the NDPP, the ally party is going to form a government soon.
The Union minister of state for home said the BJP's victory in Nagaland was a historic one as people have shown tremendous love and affection for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reposed full faith in his vision for Nagaland.
Rio served as chief minister of Nagaland as NPF candidate for three consecutive terms between 2003-14.
In 2013, the BJP had won one seat with 1.8 per cent vote share to the NPF's 38 seats with 47 per cent vote share.
On the other hand, JD (U) also promised the support of its lone MLA to the alliance, despite a previous alliance with NPF. On Saturday, Zeliang had said he was ready to form the government with the BJP. "Therefore, it is our humble appeal to your good-self to look into the matter and intervene immediately in the interest of Nagaland in particular and the whole of Northeast at large", the letter said.
"We went to the people with a pre-poll alliance with NDPP", he said.
PRO Raj Bhavan stated that BJP legislators also informed the Governor that Y Patton has been elected as the BJP Leader for the 13th House of the NLA.
The NPF, which was in government with the BJP for 15 years, has only 26 seats that can not reach up to the majority level, however, seeks an alliance with BJP. The NPP will have alliance only with the NPF for formation of government.
But again, a solution to the seven-decade Naga problem can only be found by the BJP government at the Centre, which had signed a framework agreement with the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) in 2015.
Top sources from state BJP, however, reiterated to The Wire that the party would not step back from its earlier decision and "would back NDPP". "And when efforts are on to cobble up requisite numbers to form the government, the question of the CM resigning does not arise", NPF said. Make a donation and help pay for our journalism.
