The TIA was temporarily closed for incoming and outgoing worldwide flights following the accident.
Kathmandu: Over 50 people are feared dead after a US-Bangla Airlines aircraft today crashed and caught fire at Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) here, a top Nepalese official said.
Meanwhile, Nepal prime minister KP Sharma Oli reached the airport to take stock of the situation and assured all possible help to victims of the crash.
"The plane should have come from the right direction", he said.
How many were injured in the incident?
Those on board include 12 Nepali tour agents who were returning after an annual sales conference in Bangladesh, an official said.
Who were onboard the flight?
Airline spokesperson Kamrul Islam said 33 of the passengers were Nepali, 32 were Bangladeshi, one was Chinese and one from the Maldives. The two pilots and two cabin crew members were from Bangladesh.
The plane was reportedly carrying 67 passengers and four crew members.
It remains unclear what caused the crash, though a witness told state television the Bombardier CL604 was on fire before it hit the mountain.
The 78-seater Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft, with 71 people on board, was flying from Dhaka to Kathmandu.
The flight landed at TIA airport 2.20pm local time according to flight tracker Flight Radar.
A plane has crashed on the runway at Kathmandu airport in Nepal, killing 49 people according to police. "However, instead of landing from the north side, the plane went towards north-east and made two rounds", said Chhetri. After some silence, the clearly alarmed ATC controller shouts, "I say again, turn...!"
The tower then told the pilot his alignment was not correct, but there was no reply, Chettri added.
While a crash investigation report is awaited from the investigation commission set up by the government, it can be said from the tape archive and the eyewitness account that the Bombardier aircraft was doing an unexpected manoeuvre flying that low over the global airport.
"All of a sudden the plane shook violently and there was a loud bang afterwards", he said. "Nothing else. I don t know how I got out", Bohara said. He does not remember what happened after getting out of the plane but said that he has injuries to his head and legs. Then it lost more altitude and finally crashed.
