In the past decade, the UAE has intensified its efforts towards deploying solar energy solutions.
A three-page "Delhi Solar Agenda" issued at the end of the conference stated that the ISA reiterated its commitment to the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development that calls for eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions and for transforming our world in which development and application of technology are climate-sensitive, respect biodiversity and are resilient. The volume of investments so far made by Masdar is around US$1.7 billion in global renewable energy projects, which have a capacity of about 2.7 GW.
Susantono said: "ADB's energy policy commits $3bn per year by 2020 for promoting clean energy, including solar energy projects in its developing member countries".
This is in addition to the 13 solar development projects, either finished or being implemented under the Indian line of credit worth $143 million in African countries. He said better and cheaper solar technology should be easily available to all nations. Solar energy policy has to be to looked at in totality for development so that it can contribute to achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs), he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday announced an additional investment of 700 million euros for global solar energy generation by 2022 to reduce the use of fossil fuel and help combat climate change.
Without directly mentioning Trump, Macron praised the "solar mamas", a group of women trained as solar engineers, saying that the women had continued their mission to promote solar energy even after "some countries decided just to leave the floor and leave the Paris Agreement". They kept on moving "because they decided it's good for them, their children and grandchildren".
"With the USA withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, there is a seat open at the head table of climate leadership and India is very well poised to take that seat. They chose to act and keep acting", he said.
India and France called for affordable solar technology and concessional finance for promoting solar energy. "The joint goal is to have 1 TW of solar energy by 2020 for which we need $1,000 billion", he said.
The action plan includes increasing the share of electricity generated from photovoltaic cells in the energy mix, framing of regulations and standards and consultancy support for bankable solar projects. The UAE has also launched many initiatives to provide the necessary funding to carry out and develop renewable energy generation projects, such as the initiatives taken by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and Masdar.
Macron's 4-day India visit concludes on Monday.
