The service, which offers same-day delivery in as little as three hours, will be expanded from six metro areas to more than 100, ultimately reaching more than 40% of United States households by the end of the year. With all those new cities, the service will eventually reach 40 percent of U.S. households, the company said. "For packing the items together in stores, Walmart will use its collection of more than 18,000 'personal shoppers'".
That's a major expansion from the six it now delivers in and will see Walmart home delivery groceries available to over 40% of U.S. households. Each order includes a $9.95 delivery fee, and there's a $30 minimum order requirement. The same-day service is now available at more than 70 locations.
"We're going to gain customers who might not have access to a brick-and-mortar store", he said.
Walmart's dive into online grocery delivery continues its push to become a bigger player in e-commerce and take on Amazon.
To that end, Walmart partnered with Uber in 2016 when it kicked off a grocery delivery pilot program that also included Lyft and Deliv. Shoppers can place orders at Walmart.com or the Walmart Grocery app.
Last month, Walmart shares got slammed as the company said online revenue growth slowed in the most recent quarter, raising questions about its ability to compete with Amazon.
Providing this service is another way Walmart is trying to counter Amazon's convenience and speed.
Walmart Grocery Delivery brings customers the convenience of shopping when and where they want for quality, fresh produce, meat, seafood and bakery items, along with pantry staples, consumables and seasonal general merchandise.
"We will be pretty aggressive with it", said Tom Ward, vice president of digital operations on a call with reporters.
In a statement, Walmart said the delivery service - available today in six markets - will grow to serve more than 100 US markets this year. Customers can get their first order delivered for free with promo code FRESHCAR.
Rival delivery service Instacart, which is backed in part by Whole Foods and reportedly holds an exclusive delivery deal with the grocery chain, recently announced deals with Albertsons and QFC in recent months.
