Almost a quarter of a decade later, at the 2018 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) taking place this week, the Japanese will be introducing the fifth generation of the model.
The auto maker also showed a sporty new four-door hatchback version of the Corolla that it hopes will attract younger millennial buyers. All conventional RAV4s for Canada are built in Woodstock, Ont., and for the first time, the hybrid will also be built in Canada. The combination of hybrid and gasoline engine, suspension enhancements, Toyota says it's the quickest and most fun to drive model. We told you earlier that the FT-AC concept showcased at the 2017 LA Auto Show will spawn a production model but it was not certainly expected to the RAV4. And over in America the RAV4 overtook its Corolla and Camry stablemates to become the best-selling vehicle of all if you don't count full-size pickup trucks.
The new generation doesn't mess with success.
Moreover, handling is supposedly improved by the stiffer chassis. The wheelbase is increased by 30 mm and the width by 10 mm, while the overall length and height are both reduced by 5 mm.
This new model is based on Toyota's New Global Architecture platform and launches with one petrol and one hybrid powertrain option. Hybrids now account for about one in four RAV4 sales in Canada.
The hybrid version of the RAV4 will have a 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to the usual Toyota electric setup - only this time the vehicle features a second electric motor powering the rear wheels, allowing the hybrid version to offer four-wheel drive for the first time.
In other words, the 2018 Toyota RAV4 means serious business and despite the bold styling cues, it has adventure and off-roading characteristics written all over it. We'll also have a better idea of how much all this new technology will cost by then, too.
Toyota includes its Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 as standard equipment with the 2019 RAV4.
This new-generation RAV4 adds more engine power, while getting better fuel economy and more off-road capability.
Two powertrains are on offer for the 2019 RAV4, with customers given the choice between a 2.5-liter VVT-iE engine married to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a system made of the same engine and Toyota's Hybrid System II connected to an electronically-controlled CVT. It comes with piano-black exterior accents on the fender arches and mirror caps, lower rockers and the front end, as well as a 2-tone paint scheme with a standard black roof. Pricing has not yet been announced.
