Wade's 28-point performance on Monday night was predictable, but he was aided by a ideal storm of missed Sixers' shots and untimely turnovers as the Heat evened the series, 1-1, with a 113-103 victory on Monday.
The Heat's win over the 76ers Monday took the teams' first-round playoff series in a different direction than some anticipated, and provoked much different reactions from a pair of high-profile observers. The Heat's defense was stifling; Justice Winslow, James Johnson, and Josh Richardson held the 76ers in check (the trio combined for 34 points). Wade, who comes off the bench these days, fired up the Heat early, scoring 21 points on eight-of-nine shooting to help the Heat to a 14-point half-time lead.
The 36-year-old Wade is on the downside of his hall of fame career, but on this night he looked like the Wade who in his prime helped lead Heat to three National Basketball Association championships.
The Sixers had started confidently, building a seven-point cushion to lead 29-22 at the end of the first quarter.
So, even though Brown appeared to be unaware of a profane Instagram post published by Embiid after the game suggesting he was "tired of being babied", Brown knows the spirit of the message is more indicative of the 24-year-old's desire to be back on the hardwood than any bubbling discontent with the organization. The Sixers made four baskets and scored 13 points in the quarter.
Game Three is on Friday.
Embiid has had less fun watching the 76ers compete without him, having undergone surgery after accidentally butting heads with teammate Markelle Fultz in a game in late March. Covington, Saric, Redick and Marco Belinelli all rushed up ugly shots from long range when there was still time left for better looks. In each of his two games in Miami, Embiid also made three three-pointers.
"I hate this feeling but maybe it's a good reminder for everybody for next game to lock in", Simmons said.
Joel Embiid will need to wear a protective mask over his face when he returns.
"If it was my decision, I would play", Embiid said, "but I can't get back out on the court if I don't have the OK from them". It's borne out of him wanting to be with his team. Joel Embiid changes the dynamics in many ways of this team.
Embiid averaged 22.9 points while grabbing 11 boards and nearly two blocks per game, showing his importance on both ends of the floor for a relatively inexperienced Philadelphia team.
"He was a graceful man".
"And that's a partnership with Joel and the medical people, it's a collaborative thing with the bottomline being what's best for his health", Brown said.
