The Senate had been expected to leave town on August 3 for a four-week break before returning to Capitol Hill in early September. McConnell has also made it a top priority to confirm as many of President Trump's lifetime judicial appointments as possible this year. He was heading to the White House later Tuesday for talks.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell signalled he was unwilling to spend much time on the "contentious" measure, saying he wanted to focus in the coming months on "getting bills passed that we have to do for the country".
They're trying to prevent the moderates from joining with Democrats to pass the "Dreamer" protections, which polls suggest are popular, but which would be a setback for GOP leaders and expose the majority to complaints from the conservative base. "From day one, the Senate Democrats have shamelessly obstructed, stalled, and filibustered the confirmations of hundreds of talented men and women who are eager to come to Washington, D.C., to make a difference". Twice as many judicial vacancies have been created under Trump than have been filled, while Dems drag their feet.
"We have a lot of work to do due to historic obstruction", McConnell stated. Severino, JCN's chief counsel and policy director, wrote.
"We'll be here. It will be an enjoyable August", said Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner, who is head of the Republican Senate campaign arm. "I will never sign a bill like this again", he said on March 23.
"While we all agree on the need to ensure the global trade system is fair for American workers, companies and consumers, unfortunately, the administration is abusing the Section 232 authority delegated to the president by Congress", said Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"If we don't change it, let's have a shutdown".
Starting Monday in the Senate, McConnell has teed up votes on three nominees to serve as federal district court judges, including the first Hispanic lawyer whom Trump nominated for the bench, Fernando Rodriguez Jr. of Texas.
He said "making claims regarding national security to justify what is inherently an economic question not only harms the very people we all want to help and impairs relations with our allies but also could invite our competitors to retaliate".
Republican leaders do not back Corker's efforts.
"McConnell doesn't want the PR nightmare of dozens of negative town halls in August".
"Given the urgency of these weeks, we presume he won't be jetting off to Bedminster or Mar-a-Lago or spending countless hours on the golf course, given the pain his policies have caused the middle class, particularly on health care". Mike Rounds, one of several GOP senators who pressured McConnell to cancel the August recess. Brian Schatz, D-Hi; Sen.
"You know Mitch McConnell will do anything to keep all of us from going back to our constituents, touching base with them".
"Joe Manchin is a guy who likes to talk to everybody and listen to them and nearly inevitably, he does what's right for West Virginia", Schumer said. The majority of Republican senators and representatives have confirmed Trump's nominees, agreed to blow up the United States deficit, and generally declined to comment on unsavory details about his personal life.
