Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd said there were 14 people in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and 12 of them were undocumented immigrants. The vehicle was traveling around 100 miles per hour, the sheriff said.
It's not an uncommon sight for Boyd, who said Sunday it's very rare that a day goes by that his deputies do not get involved in a chase due to some form of smuggling from the border.
"When you exempt a group of people from the law ... that creates a draw", said Manuel Padilla, the Border Patrol's chief agent there.
Border Patrol agents were called to the scene to assist with the apprehension of the illegal immigrants and one U.S. Citizen. He adds that no children were in the truck.
Eventually attorneys asked what the girl's situation was before they found and reunited her with her aunt.
During the chase, the driver of the 2007 Suburban, 20-year-old Jorge Luis Monsivais Jr. of Eagle Pass, Texas, crashed his SUV as he entered the town of Big Wells, Texas.
Remes said the agent, who has not been identified, turned on the vehicle's sirens after the incident, but did not stop to check on him. He said at least one and possibly two others died at a hospital. He says if the victim does make it, he or she may not fully recover.
Boyd said the sheriff's office had "handled" the driver during an encounter last week when he appeared to be scouting for a smuggling operation.
Speaking to CNN after the visit to Ursula, he said: "In wire-mesh, chain linked cages that are about 30x30 [feet], a lot of young folks put into them".
The driver, a suspected smuggler and also believed to be a US citizen, survived the crash, according to NBC News.
Federal prosecutors allege that the driver of the 2008 Tahoe-a 17-year-old US citizen who has not been identified-evaded authorities before coming to a stop. He is still in the hospital.
He also said that he was denied entry to a children's shelter earlier this month.
"I'm doing all right, I'm just a little sore, really", Remes said Friday.
"Well, we have an orchestra here", he can be heard saying in Spanish.
"They take women against their will and they take them to rape them and kill them", she says. "The vehicle rolled over a short distance later on Highway 85 near Big Wells, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities", the statement reads. Vehicles were detoured to FM 468 and FM 1867.
