"This week, a patient who visited the emergency department at our Los Gatos campus had an interaction with a physician whose demeanour was unprofessional and not the standard we require of all who provide care through El Camino Hospital. The physician is a contracted provider and has been removed from our ER schedule".
The patient usually took Klonopin, a benzodiazepine that can treat anxiety, panic attacks, or seizures.
Samuel Bardwell, 20, a college athlete, collapsed at basketball practice with an apparent anxiety attack.
"He had a prescription waiting for him at the pharmacy but could not pick it up", Bardwell told the newspaper. "We didn't know what the outcome of not taking the meds would be".
Efforts by McClatchy to reach Keegstra were unsuccessful.
In a statement, El Camino Hospital said it's taking the matter "very seriously" and has since apologized to Bardwell and his son. At El Camino Hospital, he complained to the doctor about anxiety and muscle pain.
From that point on, the conversation was captured on camera. Bardwell's father, Donald Bardwell, recorded Keegstra scoffing when Samuel Bardwell said he couldn't inhale.
"Sure", Keegstra replied. "And he doesn't have Klonopin because he doesn't have his Klonopin".
When the 6-foot-9 Bardwell told Keegstra he couldn't get up, the doctor responded.
Keegstra also was seen on the cellphone video angrily telling Bardwell he's "the least sick of all the people who are here who are dying". "There, you picked your head up. Yeah, that's how pissed off you've gotten me". She even tries to yank him up after he clearly states that he can not move.
Bardwell told Keegstra that he could not get up from the bed.
"You want us to wheel you to your house in a gurney?" I said, 'Please, dad, can you please take out your phone?. He was given fluids and medication for his anxiety and pain. But even if it wasn't a "race thing", that would still be a problem, he said.
"I knew from when she said something to the security guard".
"This is ridiculous", Keegstra interrupted and cursed at the patient. I'm just so confused of why somebody would treat me like that, Bardwell said. "Sam played for maybe five minutes before he had to step out", Bardwell's coach, Scott Eitelgeorge, said.
In the video, Bardwell is heard telling the doctor that Samuel had vomited and "was going in an out of consciousness" during the episode.
Dan Wood, the chief executive officer of El Camino Hospital, issued a statement saying Dr. Keegstra, who has been a practicing physician for 31 years, has been suspended from all facilities associated with the hospital.
The doctor offered some belittling to go along with her treatment.
