"If you're hesitant about buying the Pass, but want to play the missions, you're free to do that". No examples were given, but PUBG Corp said there will be "dozens of missions" including daily, weekly, and Sanhok-specific objectives. You'll unlock items by completing missions and "leveling up" your pass, and it sounds like there will be plenty of missions to complete. According to the developer, it's a system for players to "unlock content in meaningful ways". The pass offers Sanhok-themed content - hence the name - based on challenges you can perform on all maps. It's unclear if the Event Pass will tie into the Crate system at all, either by rewarding Crates, Keys, or currency, but it wouldn't be surprising if it did.
If you do purchase the Event Pass, however, the items you unlock will be yours to keep.
