A new report coming from Bloomberg now talks about a couple of new features that one can expect from the upcoming wireless earphones.
The new earbuds would tout better noise-cancellation and water resistance against rain and sweat.
We have been hearing rumours about Apple's next-gen HomePod audio device but nothing concrete is known about the Airpods successor.
While none of this is unexpected as such, the timescales may be of note. Likewise, depending on when the second-generation AirPods debut it is possible the third-generation may not have been originally anticipated until 2020. Bloomberg reported that Apple is "internally" discussing including a heart-rate monitor, a move that would add AirPods to its expanding health-related hardware lineup.
Why it matters: Mobile accessories are an important part of the overall consumer electronics ecosystem and a solid source of revenue, especially for Apple as iPhone unit growth slows. Apple already stocks the Beats Studio 3 over-ear headphones.
Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Thus far, the company has used Inventec and Luxshare Precision for manufacturing but it has struggled to meet demand. When the earbuds first came out in 2016, they were delayed, and there was limited supply after the product finally went on sale.
