A brand-new hypersonic plane design has been released by Boeing that could travel at speeds up to 6,500km per hour and take passengers from London to Australia in just six-and-a-half hours.
Should such an aircraft be created to Mach 5 specifications, it would be able to zoom between London and NY in just an hour (rather than the current standard seven). "The world's just not big enough to go much faster than Mach 5", he added.
In a presentation at the 2018 American Institute of Aeronautics Aviation in Atlanta the United States company unveiled its design for the unnamed plane, saying it could travel of speed of up to 6500km/h. "The hypersonic jet's sharp front-end design will produce minimal drag while the split tail would help to stabilise and steer the vehicle".
According to Boeing's studies, Mach 5 - five times the speed of sound, or nearly 4,000 miles per hour - is the watershed velocity between civil and most nontransport military operations, Aviation Week reported.
"Boeing is building upon a foundation of six decades of work designing, developing and flying experimental hypersonic vehicles, which makes us the right company to lead the effort in bringing this technology to market in the future", said Kevin Bowcutt, senior technical fellow and chief scientist of hypersonics at the company.
While this design specifically is meant to carry passengers at top speeds, a statement from Boeing did leave room for the possibility of other hypersonic designs with commercial or military potential.
"This aircraft would allow you to fly across the ocean and back in one day, which is all most people would want. For the business traveler or the military, where time is really important, that's an interesting point". "You can get across the Atlantic in about 2 hours. and across the Pacific in about 3 hours". Musk said at a space conference previous year it could take passengers from NY to Shanghai in just half an hour.
