Looks like the upcoming Top Gun sequel may be taking a page out of Creed's playbook. Iceman and Maverick were rivals throughout the film, and their antics led to the death of Maverick's co-pilot Goose. Glen Powell (Hidden Figures) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Apocalypse) also tested for the same role.
A follow-up to Tony Scott's 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.
Oblivion helmer Joe Kosinski is directing the film. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is now without an official title. While the Hollywood star kept details about where we'll see his character pick up all these years later, he did reveal the film is "a progression for Maverick".
"Yeahhh, in no world would Meg Ryan and Anthony Edwards produce Miles Teller", one fan wrote.
"We can do nothing to stop this".
When it was reported that Teller had been chosen, Powell took to Twitter to offer a clever response.
"Another person tweeted: "*Catches up with film news* Who the hell casts Miles Teller over Glen Powell? So maybe Goose Jr.is a drone operator, one of the aforementioned "fifth generation fighters", or doesn't actually have anything to do with aviation. He just finished shooting the Amazon series "Too Old to Die Young" with "Drive" director Nic Refn directing.
