A new round of negative headlines is putting the spotlight on Scott Pruitt, the ethically challenged Environmental Protection Agency chief whose ever-expanding list of controversies has been one of the most consistent themes of the Trump administration.
Chmielewski said in an interview last month that he was in Jackson's office when Hupp approached Pruitt's chief of staff to explain that the period for transition reimbursements had expired and that Pruitt had not covered the bill.
Pruitt, in a statement, denied the reports.
"Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this", Trump wrote.
Pruitt had appeared Wednesday at a White House picnic for Independence Day, wearing a red-checked shirt and loafers with gold trim.
White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley told reporters on Tuesday that Trump is looking into the "numerous reports" about Pruitt.
Thus far, however, President Trump has remained publicly supportive of Pruitt. He was not asked directly about the CNN report.
Pruitt has faced criticism and intense scrutiny for his management of the environmental agency, spending on his security detail and decision to rent a room in Washington, DC, tied to an energy lobbyist.
Trump has publicly criticized Sessions since past year, mainly for recusing himself from the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
A former Oklahoma attorney general close to the oil and gas industry, Pruitt had filed more than a dozen lawsuits against the agency he was picked to lead.
"We deserve to have someone at the EPA who actually does protect our environment, somebody who believes in climate change and takes it seriously for the benefit of all of us, including our children", Mink told Pruitt.
According to CNN, advisers dismissed the proposal, but Trump floated replacing Sessions with Pruitt as recently as April. The EPA told the outlet it wouldn't comment "on anonymous sources who are working to distract Americans from the Trump administration's accomplishments on regulatory certainty and environmental stewardship". But he's done a fantastic job running the EPA, which is very overriding.
There are also multiple inquiries into Pruitt's lease of a $50-a-night Capitol Hill condo in 2017 from lobbyist Vicki Hart.
Pruitt's offer came in the spring while Trump was publicly castigating Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.
