In January, the New York Times reported on Devumi, a company that sells followers and retweets to anyone who wanted to inflate their social media influence.
Pakistani celebrity Twitter users with massive followers also experienced the same decrease.
While it can not be said for certain that the fluctuation in follower counts is attributable to the follower purge, CTVNews.ca's analysis of these accounts show there has been some considerable change among some of the country's most-followed politicians and political accounts. Amitabh Bachchan has in fact faced the biggest hit by losing out on the maximum number of followers.
Barack Obama went from 103 million followers to 101 million. But worry not, he still has 1.7M followers.
"In most cases, these [locked] accounts were created by real people but the platform can not confirm that the original person who opened the account still has control and access to it", Twitter had said, adding that spam or bot accounts on the other hand showed "spammy" behaviour from the beginning. The locked accounts were dormant for at least a month awaiting a password change by the owner, so it should not affect daily or monthly user metrics, the company wrote.
Twitter earlier this week announced it will remove locked accounts - which are disabled owing to suspicious activity - from follower counts across profiles globally.
The average user was told to expect a drop of about four followers or fewer, while the more followed account holders were warned it could be a lot higher.
According to its official statement, Twitter will begin removing tens of millions of suspicious accounts from users' followers signalling a major new effort to restore trust on the popular platform.
