If you're already acquainted with Musk and his weird entanglement with the Thai cave story, you may skip to the end of this report for a fuller accounting of his baseless pedophilia accusations.
Musk's fans lauded his intentions, his submarine drive-by also became the butt of many jokes.
The Guardian says that when one of Musk's 22 million followers pointed out that Musk was "calling the guy who found the children a pedo", the entrepreneur "doubled down", writing: "Bet ya a signed dollar it's true".
Musk then criticised the leader of the rescue mission, saying he was "not the subject matter expert" and any goodwill towards Musk dried up.
The complex mission for global and Thai divers to guide the boys and coach through the cave's flooded passageways riveted people worldwide.
"I was *asked* to help repeatedly", Musk continued in another tweet.
"He [Musk] had no conception of what the cave passage was like. the submarine, I believe, was about 5'6" long, rigid, so it wouldn't have gone round corners or round any obstacles".
On Sunday, Musk responded via a prolonged Twitter tirade, before later deleting the tweets.
Musk had already attracted criticism for his approach to the Thai rescue after Narongsak Osatanakorn, head of the joint command centre, said the mini-submarine was sophisticated but not practical for the operation.
Several key figures involved in the rescue said that Unsworth was integral to the success of the operation.
Musk has also defended himself from skeptics of the subs' potential usefulness, sharing correspondence with the rescue team as they provided encouragement and feedback. The tweet was later deleted.
"He can stick his submarine where it hurts", the expert diver said.
One journalist, a senior correspondent for Vanity Fair, tweeted that he cancelled his Tesla order over Musk's donation. "Thai navy seals escorted us in - total opposite of wanting us to leave", Musk wrote.
