Los Angeles police named a 28-year-old man on Sunday as the suspect who took hostages and barricaded himself for three hours inside a Trader Joe's grocery store in which he fatally shot a woman.
Atkin's grandmother was left in critical condition in the earlier attack on Saturday, police said.
The situation began around 3:30 pm local time, after a suspect allegedly shot his girlfriend and grandmother and drove his grandmother's vehicle into a pole outside a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake neighborhood.
The suspect "jumped out of the auto, and it looked like he shot some rounds off when he got out of the vehicle", Dan Zito, who said he was only feet away from the crash, said to KNBC-TV. Six people were transported in fair condition and non-life threatening injuries. An employee of the Associated Press who lives in the area reported seeing a auto crashed into a utility pole outside the store.
The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted there was an "active incident" at a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake area.
"The suspect then crashed his vehicle, at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred", police said. He grabbed a folding ladder and tossed it out a window, helping his colleagues escape to safety, he told KNBC-TV. Police were still trying to determine whether there are any hostages inside the store.
He barricaded himself inside the store, with some of the 40 to 50 people inside, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Mayor Eric Garcetti congratulated police and firefighters for their work and mourned the loss of life at the Trader Joe's, where he and his wife regularly shopped when they lived in the neighborhood.
Police said the suspect, who is in his late teens, shot his grandmother and a younger woman earlier in the day elsewhere.
The gunfire shattered the glass doors, Kohles said, and the gunman ran inside and "down the middle aisle". It also showed officers carrying a person who appeared to be injured.
Police were responding to a report of a shooting at the Trader Joe's near Hyperion Avenue and Silver Lake Boulevard in Silver Lake Saturday afternoon.
After about 30 minutes, police came inside and rushed some of the customers out. "We appreciate everything Los Angeles law enforcement did to ensure an end to this ordeal".
One shopper was in front of the store when the pursuit ended.
"After he was inside the store for a little while they had me crawl away from the scene and run away around the corner", Field said. It wasn't clear if employees or customers were still inside the store.
