Opener Shikhar Dhawan wrote, "My deepest condolences on the passing of our former Prime Minister Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji. His condition is critical and he is on life support system", Dr Aarti Vij said in a press release. He had been admitted in June to the All India institute of Medical Sciences in the capital, suffering from a urinary tract infection and chest congestion.
The three-time Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a Hindu nationalist who set off a nuclear arms race with Pakistan but later reached across the border to begin a groundbreaking peace process, has died aged 93.
His more than five-decade-long career peaked in the 1990s, when his masterful oratory attracted tens of thousands of people to his rallies across the country. "He travelled across the length and breadth of India to spread the BJP's message, which led to the BJP becoming a strong force in our national polity and in several states", read another tweet of the Prime Minister.
Fast bowler Ishant Sharma said, "Saddened to hear the demise of a Great statesman & Glorious leader, Shri Vajpayeeji".
Condoling the death of Vajpayee, former president Pranab Mukherjee said that India had lost a great son and an era had come to an end. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the most charismatic leaders, is no more.
Khan said the subcontinent had lost a phenomenal and a visionary political figure, whose contribution will never be forgotten in Pak-India relations.
Vajpayee was one of the founding members of Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which now governs India. "We will miss him". The nuclear tests and the talks that followed laid the foundations for the landmark India-US nuclear deal that was clinched in 2008.
Facing heavy criticism at home and overseas over India's nuclear ambitions, Vajpayee defied the threat of economic sanctions, telling parliament that "we have never made a decision after coming under global pressure and we will never do so in the future".
He had since rarely been seen or heard in public.
He had suffered a stroke in 2009 that weakened his cognitive abilities.
He continues to enjoy devotion in many parts of the country, especially in key bellwether Hindu-heartland states in north and central India.
